Headford-Kilcoona Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann

Welcome from Chairperson

Dear Friends in Music/A Chairde Cheoil go Léir,

Our identity as Irish people is something we should never take for granted. The Ireland of today is very much a multicultural place (and we are all the better for it), but what we should never do in assimilating other ethnic cultures and foreign influences is over look the importance of our uniqueness as a people.

What makes us who, and what, we are and unique amongst other nationalities is largely the product of our cultural identity. Our music, our song, our dance and our language continues to endear the Irish to people from America to Australia and Chile to China and our creative imagination sets us apart globally in a very unique fashion.

When the Headford-Kilcoona Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann last staged the County Fleadh in Headford during the 70s I could scarcely count on two hands the amount of practising traditional performers there were in this area. Today, in contrast there are hundreds and this transformative vista is something I am very proud of as a teacher, performer and local. Indeed Galway County Fleadh will celebrate the vibrant traditions of music, song, dance and language both in the area and across the county and empower many young traditional performers as they strive to hone their skills.

I want to take this opportunity to wish all the competitors gathered in Headford well in their efforts to represent our county at provincial and national level. I particularly want to send good wishes to those who may be entering these competitions for the very first time and say to you that in this first but crucial step you have already reached a milestone.

Fleadh Cheoil na Gaillimhe wouldn’t be possible to stage in Headford without the galant efforts and generosity of a number of people. Firstly, I wish to thank the staff and board of managements of Presentation College Headford and Scoil Mhuire na Dea Chomhairle for opening their doors as the main competition venues. To each and every one of the sponsors, and in particular to St Jarlath’s Credit Union (our main sponsor), I say thank you sincerely for giving in the way that you did. I would also like to thank the Galway County Board of Comhaltas for giving the Headford-Kilcoona Branch the opportunity to showcase our area and traditions during this weekend.

Finally, I wish to acknowledge the immense contribution made by the members of the Headford-Kilcoona Branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann and this years County Fleadh Committee in staging Galway County Fleadh in Headford. This tenacious group has ensured by way of its efforts that Fleadh Cheoil na Gaillimhe 2019 will be an outstanding success.

Embrace everything that the fleadh has to offer and create memories that will live in your minds and hearts for years to come.

Ar agahaidh leis an gceol!

Matt Cunningham

Comhaltas County Chairman’s Address

Céad Míle Fáilte, go gach duine go dtí Ath Cinn.

The Fleadh Committee and I would like to welcome everyone to Headford this Fleadh weekend. We hope you enjoy the whole experience of the Fleadh and the huge social gathering to celebrate our Language, Music, Song and Dance. “Mol an Óige agus tiocfaidh siad” is an old Irish saying that means when we praise our youth and give them opportunities they will prosper, grow and show us the way. Comhaltas is all about giving opportunities to people to achieve and grow in confidence.

When a stranger sits beside another total stranger they don’t know anything about each other but when they play, sing or dance together they communicate with each other in so many ways and create a joyous experience. I hope that people will meet others here in such way in Headford and bring home wonderful memories of this weekend. To the Competitors’ I say take a deep breath and do of your best in our Fleadh Competitions and be happy to be part of this Event. You are a winner all our Eyes by taking part.

I am extremely grateful to C.C.E Kilcoona/ Headford for hosting this feast of Culture. To say that this is an event does not adequately cover what has been happening around this area this . The Kilcoona/Headford Branch have been in existence for many years teaching the traditions and they have also been running the most enjoyable Sessiuns and Ceili , for the young and not so young, in this Region, setting down strong roots and generating new friendships in the Community. The Branch Committee have been a joy to work with and have helped bring in many others from around the Community to make this an outstanding festival.

We would like to thank the Principals and Management of both Presentation College Secondary School and Scoil Mhuire na Dea Chomhairle National School as well for providing their fine Premises and facilitiesfor the Fleadh this weekend. I am extremely grateful for all the sponsorship from St. Jarlath's Credit Union, Galway County Council,  Comhaltas Ceolteóirí Eireann and the local businesses around Headford in making this week possible and the open hearted welcome the community have given everyone. Thanks to everyone around Headford for the huge effort in making visiting the town so memorable. I would also thank all the Comhaltas People from around our County and beyond for giving their time in helping out to ensure that events are run as professionally as possible.

Comhaltas should be proud and one happy family over this weekend. Well done to all concerned.

Peadar Brick,

County Chairman
